    Genre

    nonfic

    BUY

    Bookshop

If you've ever read something I wrote about books, it's like 80% certainty that it once had a whole section about bonkbusters that I cut. Like my summer reading list from 2023 had one, my essay on The Hunger Games had one, my unpublished essay on how bonkbusters are the Horatio Alger tales of the 80s definitely has one. It's a genre I think about constantly and now there is an entire academic book on it! Downside: it's being sold at academic book prices.

I think.

Luckily, the sun already doesn't exist in February in New England so I will not have that problem this year.

This show was always a litte too heavy on the cringe for me to truly enjoy but here is season 3 of the Lisa Kudrow mockumentary, only 11+ years after season two. Kudrow plays washed up TV star Valerie Cherish who is oblivious to the idea she's washed up. I'm kind of interested to see what aspects of Hollywood the new season satirizes and they've added Andrew Scott to the cast so worth checking out.

Our second excellent-sounding trad wife horror of the year. Bookshop

This is the biggest book news of the year for me. I've been searching for new Whitaker since 2017's The Animators, one of my most reread books of the past decade. Not that it didn't get praise when it came out, but it should have had the audience that Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow did. It's been ten years since that wonderful debut and her new book is not only out but it's set in an '80s department store, which is the best possible setting I can imagine (that may say things about me, I don't know). Go read The Animators if you like books about women making art together.

  192.  A Perfect Hand

    Ayelet Waldman

    Genre

    historical fiction/romance

    BUY

    Bookshop

I skipped over this book twice, once because I really only know Waldman from that essay where she talked about how she loves her husband (Michael Chabon) more than her kids and the second time because I was annoyed by a blurb where the writer said they're too good for romance but maybe they'd try THIS one. If you're too good for the genre, don't engage with the genre. But in fairness, the description sounds really fun! A lady's maid falls for a valet in another household and tries to arrange a match between their employers so they can be together. I love an upstairs downstairs romance. Think the new season of Bridgerton or the movie Set it Up meets Downton Abbey.

This NEW Babysitters Club book was leaked a couple of months ago. It's a super special where each character is written by a different one of a lineup of super successful contemporary YA authors AND writers and ghostwriters of the original series. Now that it's officially announced, Scholastic is referring to it as a spin-off title; does that mean we get more down the road? Could not be more excited and I might reread some of the series before July.

    in theaters

It annoys me when all romantic movies get classified as romcoms because 90% of them contain no comedy. You Deserve Each Other, starring Penn Badgley and Meghann Fahy, will not have this problem. The book is about a couple who are completely fed up with each other but neither wants to be the bad guy by ending it, so they engage in a game of brinksmanship to try to force their partner into doing the dumping. A tremendous debut; I can't wait for the movie.
